Campus France had said that a total of 430,466 foreign students enrolled in the French universities in the 2023/24 academic year though this was 4.6% higher than the same period the previous year. This figure has been on the rise and considering the increase from the last year growth rate of 3 percent, French destinations are becoming increasingly popular for students aspiring to further their studies to the next level.
On the other hand, Canada has pulled up stunning figure of about 29% only regarding the enrollment from the foreign students in 2023 after it has increased by 30% in 2022. The UK and US some of the world’s most sought-after study destinations for international students, recorded a 12% rise in numbers for the 2022/23 academic year, while Germany recorded a 5% increase this year.
Now foreign students make up about one-sixth of total enrolment in higher education institutions of France. France’s numbers have increased due to new interest from the Asia-Pacific region which had not increased the previous year. Notably, French institutions shows 6% increase in Chinese students and a whooping 12% increase in Indian students.
Among the top ten markets, there were notable trends: Morocco dropped for the second successive year (-4%), while Algeria edged up 7%. For instance, Italy, Spain, Cameroon, Lebanon have recorded an increase of more than forty percent in the last five years. For instance based on data from 2023/24 enrollment Lebanon has become a major supplier of students, which was 90 percent greater five years ago and, even though this year there was a slight drop.
Looking at the ratio of different kinds of institutions, it turns out that about two thirds of foreign students are enrolled in universities in France, while the increase in this number is only 2 percent. This trend however was offset by business schools where the number of international students was 11% greater and engineering schools were 9% more popular than the previous year. It has been five years that the priority of Business Schools has increased the percentage of students among the international community in France from 10 to 15 percent.
