In the recent blog post with the title Intelligence Age, the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman concludes that humanity may get the superintelligence in several thousands of days. He looks forward for a future wherein AI complements human abilities, leading to tremendous advacements in science as well as becoming a great booster for the world’s economy.
According to Altman people have established society as a GIGA infrastructure that utilizes collective memory to outperform the talents of individuals. According to him, this advantage will be extended by AI by providing solutions to problems currently unsolvable. “We are simply way more capable not due to the change in gene but because we get to be ‘smart’ in the societal infrastructure,” he continued.
This he ascribes to deep learning, saying the effectiveness of AI has improved due to higher computational power, and data. ‘The more compute and data available ‘, says Altman ‘, the better it gets at helping people solve hard problems’.
Besides, he is optimistic about AI and forecasts that it will raise living standards all around the world and help to solve problems like climate change and space travel but does not
eliminate economic growth with happiness. He admits that AI could make lives better but it does not promise happiness.
However, Altman states that there is likely to be negative trends in the job market occasioned by the rise in application of AI. However, he believe that AI is all about increasing human creativity. He stresses the task of ensuring that the new technology serves everyone pointing to a scenario where rather than help people overcome their differences the machines created to support AI could become a reason for conflict.
