Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon has been appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to head the U.S. Department of Education. As part of Trump’s larger goal to restructure government, McMahon, who co-founded WWE with her husband Vince McMahon, will assume leadership of the organization.

Trump hailed McMahon as a “fierce advocate” for parental rights in education in a statement released on Tuesday. He emphasized her dedication to making sure all children, irrespective of their socioeconomic status or place of residence, had access to a top-notch education. Expanding school choice nationwide, a subject Trump has continuously supported, will be McMahon’s first priority as Education Secretary. One of the main components of Trump’s education policy has been the idea of school choice, which supports alternatives to conventional public schools including charter schools and private establishments.

During Trump’s first term, from 2017 till her resignation in 2019, McMahon, a longstanding Republican fundraiser and political friend, was the administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA). She became the chair of America First Action, a super PAC that backs Trump’s political initiatives, after leaving the SBA. Additionally, McMahon was instrumental in the establishment of the America First legislative Institute, a think organization she co-founded in 2021 to further Trump’s legislative agenda.

It is anticipated that Trump’s selection of McMahon to head the Department of Education will be a component of a larger initiative to alter the federal government’s approach to education, with a focus on expanding parental and student options while lowering federal monitoring.
